HISTORY OF MISS KANSAS RODEO PAGEANT

The first Miss Rodeo Kansas Pageant was held during the 1963 Flint Hills Rodeo. There were five contestants. They were judged as contestants are today, on horsemanship, appearance, and personality. In 1981 the Pageant was moved to Wichita, Kansas for the Prairie Circuit Rodeo. Then, in 1984, the competition was held in Colby, Kansas in conjunction with the Thomas County Fair. It was moved to Dodge City, Kansas and sponsored by the Dodge City Roundup, Inc.

The Pageant has grown each year since its inception, having up to 15 contestants for the title in a single year. In 1987 the Scholarship Award was added to prizes, which gives our contestants a chance to further their education with the help of Kansas sponsors. The Dodge City pageant committee added the Princess contest in 1992. They were hoping to get younger adult ladies interested in the Sport of Rodeo and the Miss Rodeo Kansas Pageant. This would also give the young ladies more experience in the pageant competition. The Pageant is held annually to select a young lady who has the desire and enthusiasm to serve as goodwill ambassador for the Sport of Rodeo and the State of Kansas.
